General Information

Tourist Class - Consists of Sleeper Accommodation
Passengers have a choice between a coupe that can accommodate two people and a compartment that can take-up to four people. During the day the compartment/ coupe are suites and at night they are converted into bedrooms, with both having hot and cold water. In addition both have a basin beneath a fold-up table.

Economy Class - consists of Sitting Accommodation
The comfortable seats all have head and back rests, and offer lots of legroom and overhead luggage facility .

Ablution Facilities
Tourist Class - Communal toilets and showers are available at both ends of each coach.
Economy Class - Communal toilets are available at both ends of each coach.

Bedding - Tourist Class Only
To make sure you have a good night's sleep, fresh bedding is available at an additional cost. You are also welcome to take your own bedding into your compartment. Bedding tickets can be purchased on board the train. The Bedding Attendant will make your bed and clean your compartment/coupe.

Catering
Food and snacks can be purchased from the dining car and for passengers who prefer to stay in their compartment/coupe, a trolley service is available.

Dining Car Manager
The Dining Car Manager supervises the dining car and the personnel, and arranges meal sittings. This is the person to speak to in connection with all matters related to catering and special dietary requirements. Please do remember to inform us about your dietary requirements when making a booking.

Motor Car Transportation
Shosholoza Meyl has the capacity to transport motor vehicles and 4x4 vehicles to and from the following stations:
Johannesburg - Cape Town
Johannesburg - Durban

Passengers must make provision for private insurance on their vehicles.

Collection of Tickets
Tickets may be collected at any Shosholoza Meyl ticket office nation-wide.

Departure and Arrival Times
Passengers are requested to board at least 30 minutes before the departure time shown on the ticket. Shosholoza Meyl cannot guarantee that trains will arrive or depart on time. Shosholoza Meyl trains will however not depart before the times indicated on timetables.

Incentives
Chilren Fares - Economy and Tourist Class

· 0 – 2 years = free of charge
· 3 – 9 years = 20% discount (child pays 80% of full fare)
· 10 years and older = Full Fare (100%)

Senior Citizens
Senior Citizens of 60 years and older are entitled to a discount during off-peak periods when they travel in Tourist Class (not applicable to Economy Class). Senior Citizens should produce their identity documents when buying a ticket.

Security
We have 24 hour security personnel onboard and on certian routes the SAPS are also deployed.

 The following are the Security Deliverables: 

·         Ensuring security visibility in stations and platforms (crime prevention and incident management);

·         Conducting platform marshalling duties (ensure closure of train door, manage issues of yellow line crossing, illegal rails and level crossing);

·         Performing access control activities (ticket verifying and fare evasion operations);

·         Managing crowd behaviour (overcrowding issues, smoking inside train coaches, train surfing, staff riding, travelling between coaches); and

·        Managing customer relations (attending to customer complaints and challenges).

Train Manager
The Train Manager is in charge of your train. His/Her responsibilities include the welcoming of customers, allocation of seats and the inspections of tickets. He/She is the person who will attend to all your needs en route.
